Obstacles and Opportunities

Bulky oak cabinets were showing their age and this homeowner needed better storage options.

With all four kids out of the house, this couple was ready for a change. In the beginning they wanted a more traditional kitchen with cherry cabinetry, but inspiration struck and they went for a more transitionallook. The new kitchen features custom cabinets with a dark stain and simple but elegant door style.

A clean tile backsplash was installed with a feature piece behind the range. New Cambria countertops with a waterfall edge finish off the space on a crisp and cool note. Hardwood floors were continued into the living room and the fireplace was completely re-worked.

Bulky oak built-ins were carefully removed and replaced with new cabinetry and open shelving. New lighting was hidden in an architectural soffit tohighlight this homeowner’s favorite artwork and keep the space feeling light and bright. At the desk area, new cabinets were installed with a grand barn wood wall to define the space and make it a cozy place to work.

After choosing a brand new range hood, an updated quartzite mosaic tile was chosen to accent the new appliances.

This tile feature goes all the way up to the ceiling and helps to define the cooking zone. Small glass tiles were inserted in the mosaic to mimic the vertical effect of the waterfall countertop on the island.

When thinking about an island, it is important to think about exactly how it will be used and what needs to be stored there. In this case, our client did a lot of baking at the island and it made sense to keep the mixer, baking utensils, and pans in the same area.

The drawer bases make it easy to access mixing bowls and larger pans, while the other island cabinets were modified to customize the storage.

It is becoming more and more popular to keep everyday dishes in a drawer base rather than a traditional upper cabinet.

Keeping the dishes lower means they are easy for everyone in the family to access and the drawer option eliminates the need to bend down or reach in to the back of a cabinet.

The kitchen is definitely the star of this remodel but it did encompass the whole main level. The living room and office nook also got big face lifts. See more photos below!

Once drowning in dowdy brick and golden oak cabinetry, this fireplace is now a modern, cozy place to curl up by the fire. Though four men put up a valiant effort, professional movers were ultimately called in to place the new solid limestone hearth.

Floating shelves were thoughtfully placed with lighting to showcase this client's favorite pieces and a reclaimed wood mantelpiece ties it all together.

Barn wood planks were provided by Signature Woods and meticulously placed by our lead carpenter, Ross. These feature walls continue the casually warm style that runs throughout this new space and the custom desk cabinetry matches the kitchen and living room cabinetry to keep a cohesive look.

New iron balusters and a new handrail really help to finish off this modern space and special features like a USB outlet make this office nook a great work horse.
