Basement Remodel

Lakeville, MN

Who lives here

Joe, Jody, their two children, and their pet Corgi.

Obstacles and Opportunities

While the homeowners liked layout of their basement, they wanted to update the space and make it more appealing for their teenage son and daughter to invite their friends over.

Before: Basement Was Just OK.

A few years ago, Jody and Joe hired New Spaces to remodel their kitchen, upstairs living room, and foyer. They loved their experience and came to New Spaces when it was time to rethink their lower level. While they were happy with the overall layout of their basement, they wanted to create a space for their teenagers and their friends to enjoy.

Before: Builder grade finishes lacked originality

Standard finishes put the personality of this basement on mute. The blonde mantle was not the right scale for the fireplace. It could have been a terrific focal point. Instead it was nearly invisible.

After: Refined contemporary elements meet comfy cozy

It doesn’t take much to take a space from standard to extraordinary. The new fireplace is a highlight of the design. The white stone tile surround bridges the rustic and contemporary styles. Stained gray, the floating mantel stands out against the white stone and has an unexpected contemporary look.

Stained to match the mantel, a built-in entertainment center adds visual balance, and provides a home for all the games and electronic boxes that mystify so many of us. The wall mounted flat screen is framed by a granite blue accent wall – another unexpected contemporary detail with personality and punch.

Speaking of electronics… look ma – no wires! All the cables for power, sound, video, and data have been routed through the walls and ceilings – providing an aesthetically pleasing, tangle-free experience.

Get lost Dad!

By relocating Dad’s office upstairs to an unused bedroom, we were able to remove a wall and create space for table games. The kids love it because they have some privacy with their friends. Dad loves it because he can show off his moves at the Foosball table. He’s still cool, kids.
