Woodsy Basement Remodel in Bloomington

Peter and LaVaun lived in their 1986-built home since 1991. They loved their home and neighborhood, but wanted to make some changes to their home to better reflect their family’s changing needs. They wanted a place for their sons aged 24 and 17 to play video games, a place where the family could gather and a usable office area. Their current basement wasn’t a welcoming space and also felt outdated. A platform made it difficult to physically walk around the area and damage on some of the walls necessitated repair.

A Gathering Space and Office

The first order of business was to create distinct zones in the basement. We started by removing the platform and sectioning off the area that would become the theater. The main area became a place to watch movies with a small nook for office-work. Peter and LaVaun wanted an eclectic, woodsy design with flecks of modern influence. This final design reflects the tastes of the entire family, so the space truly feels shared. An eye-catching bleached wood wall is the focal point of the room, with contrasting wood elements to add visual texture.

The home office was moved to behind the seating area, so the family can gather in the area while still having a place to do work as needed. The distinct cow-patterned stools at the office desk create a visual pop. An additional office space was also added to a nearby room, for extra privacy.

Cozy Home Theater

Having a separate area where the boys could play video games was an important goal of the design. Additionally, the family already had some pieces they wanted to integrate into the design (wall decorations and reclining seats).

New Spaces carved out a cozy home theater, perfect for relaxing. Atmospheric LED lights line the walls to create a welcoming mood and add low lighting. The room is separated by a barn door to separate the space.

Modern Bathroom

For the bathroom, Peter and LaVaun wanted a fresh, modern design. Alternating tile patterns in the shower/tub create a compelling design.

This complements the unique, textured design of the floor tile. The white countertops and clean lines make the bathroom feel larger. The end result is a chic, modern bathroom.
