Updating a Great Room

If you're like most people, you spend quite a bit of time in your home's great room. That said, many people seem to push off updating this room the longest.

Functionality isn't as important in a great room as it is in a kitchen or master bathroom, but that doesn't mean that your great room has to be the room that's outdated or out of line with the style of your home.

In many cases, updating a great room is a simple but extremely effective project that can shift the entire way that your home looks. After all, this is usually one of the largest, most open rooms in your entire house (hence the name "great" room.)

But what can be done with a space like this?

Read on.

Update the Flooring

If your great room is suffering at account of outdated laminate flooring, worn out carpet, or anything of the like, then you may want to consider upgrading the space's flooring to something that's more in keeping with the style you want to see in your home.

Thankfully, there are a variety of options that fit with budgets both big and small. Luxury laminate flooring is a great example - it has come a long way to look much more like wood floors do. Many people can't even tell the difference between the two.

Wood flooring is another option that, of course, is tried and true. Most versions of it never go out of style and are compatible with a wide variety of looks.

Finally, upgrading the carpeting in your great room might be just the ticket. Many homes are well overdue for this change - probably because it's easy to forget what a difference it can make if you haven't made the switch in quite some time (or ever!)

Switching out the flooring in your great room can make a lot of sense if you're trying to change the look in the room, but it can also be extremely helpful if you're updating another part of your home. Sometimes having flooring that flows from one room to another is an essential part of creating a cohesive look.

Adding (or Better Utilizing) a Fireplace

In many homes, the television is the center of the great room. However, for other homes, it's the fireplace that commands attention. Even with a television present, it's unquestionable that fireplaces serve as a focal point for the entire room.

Unfortunately, that can be a bad thing if your fireplace is outdated. Certain looks came and went quickly, and many fireplaces still hold the evidence of those long-lost times.

In these cases, you may want to consider upgrading the fireplace's look. Stone fireplaces are a great example of a style that's been consistent for years and years.

If you don't have a fireplace, maybe you'd even like to consider adding one - the choice is yours!

Consider Built-ins and Shelving Options

Storage is a necessary thing for any home and for most great rooms too. If you have a television set up with a connected Blu-Ray player, sound system, or gaming console, then you're probably already aware that these things alone can make for quite a mess.

But just because storage options are necessary doesn't mean that they have to be bland. Consider how shelving can become a sleek, stylish part of your home instead of a functional requirement.
