A bathroom remodel is one of the most common home improvement projects. For that reason, it is also one that is prone to some easily-avoidable mistakes.
Before tackling any bathroom remodel, ensure that you avoid these common pitfalls.
The most exciting part of a bathroom remodel is gathering inspirational photos, drooling over luxurious features and creating a relaxing space. It is very easy to be so focused on the aesthetics that you forget to consider functionality. For example, you could have your heart set on a certain vanity only to realize after installation that there is not adequate space between the toilet and sink.
This problem can be avoided by creating the layout first and then choosing design elements. If you have your heart set on a certain feature (such as a clawfoot tub), you may have to compromise on other areas of the bathroom in order to ensure it is usable. This is also where an experienced design-build team can really help you. They can help you plan a layout that will match your design ideas while also still being functional.
A common mistake is to provide too much – or too little – lighting in the bathroom by choosing the wrong spots for light placement. Many homeowners make the mistake of opting for overhead lighting over only the vanity, toilet and/or shower which unintentionally creates harsh lighting. It is important to spread out lighting so that you avoid creating spots of harsh lighting while some areas remain dark. LED lights or under-cabinet lights are a fantastic way of adding in a softer glow.
For bathrooms with a window, some homeowners will want to use heavy coverings for privacy – unfortunately, cutting off all natural light makes your bathroom feel cramped and uninviting. Opting for privacy film or glass – or moving the placement of the window altogether – will keep your bathroom private while still allowing in light.
Most bathroom remodels include new sinks, tubs and/or showers, but with new fixtures comes extra moisture. During the planning stage, it is crucial to consider ventilation. Make sure your bathroom is able to account for daily use and that your system is also easy to access for maintenance. A design-build team with experience in bathroom remodeling can give you advice on how to plan for proper ventilation.
When remodeling your bathroom, you want to ensure that you not only have enough storage, but that it is also designed for how you will actually use your bathroom. While it is great for a photo to have everything hidden away, you might find in daily use that your toothbrush and mouthwash end up constantly on the counter because the only storage space for them is too far away. Likewise, you will need to consider bulkier items like towels – especially if your home does not have a linen closet.
Similarly, when designing a bath or shower it is important to consider the items you use regularly. The last thing you want with your brand new space is a tub ledge overflowing with bottles because there are not enough shelves nearby.
