Here's what's been happening at New Spaces.
Founded by Doug and Carol Nelson in 1980, New Spaces is a leading full-service design/build firm serving the metro area. Today, the family tradition continues with the second-generation – President Shawn Nelson. Shawn has served the Twin Cities remodeling and building industry spanning two decades, as the Builders Association of the Twin Cities (BATC) President in 2014, and as a Life Director for The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Shawn currently serves as a city council member for the City of Bloomington and as a board member for the Bloomington Convention and Visitors Bureau. In 2006, New Spaces received the Better Business Bureau Integrity Award and has continued to be honored with industry recognition for design and remodeling projects.
We are thrilled to welcome Evan to the team. Evan is working part-time while wrapping up his degree — he will graduate at the end of the year and start as our FT Project Controller in January 2023. Welcome, Evan!
Project Controller Tate, is now following his passion and training to become a Lead Carpenter with New Spaces.
Our beloved Ross will be retiring at the end of the year. We have so much appreciation for his 32 years as part of the New Spaces family. Thank you, Ross!
Congratulations to lead carpenter Ed‘s daughter, Jenna, who recently graduated with a Bachelor’s of Exercise Science with honors from Concordia University St. Paul.
This month we asked Designer, Jayme, to share a few things she’s looking forward to as we approach the Fall season in the Twin Cities!
What food, restaurant or treat are you excited about this month?
Well, its pumpkin spice season at last, and I am known to indulge in a Starbucks Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew now and again! Fall is soup season—and it’s time to get the Halloween decorations out! Anyone else excited for the Hocus Pocus sequel??
Any activities or events planned for October?
It’s my daughter’s 12th birthday is this month, and we are also looking forward to our annual trip to Sever’s Fall Festival.
What design feature, material or colors are on your radar this month?
I am currently obsessed with colors like Sherwin Williams Pewter Green (SW6208), Homburg Gray (SW7622), Greenblack (SW6994) and Jasper (SW6216) — they feel like fall to me! The project below combines my inspiration colors for the cabinets, paired with warm quartz and mixed metals.
Thank you to all those who stopped by our Scandinavian Crayfish party hosted by our friend and client Amy Haugen. We ate, sang and made some unforgettable memories.

Pride Festival in Bloomington
Home Advisor Jen celebrated Pride Month at the Bloomington Pride Celebration on August 13. Her favorite moments were running into previous clients and seeing the community come together.
Chrysalis Award
We are so excited to announce New Spaces won the 2022 Chrysalis Award for a Whole House Remodel and Addition for our 1949 Edina rambler home that had a complete interior and exterior transformation.
Home Advisor Bjorn spent the month of July in his home country of Finland where he caught up with family and consulted with Finland’s Parade of Homes leadership to generate ideas on how to create a Remodelers Showcase Tour for The Finnish Parade Of Homes — like the one we have here in our Twin Cities.
There is something magnificent about the changing of the season. A time for reflection for all the summer memories made and a time of restoration as we prepare for the winter to come.
As we wish one of our team members, Ross, a happy retirement and look forward to new people joining our team, I once again am humbled by this company my family started 40 years ago.
Our Plans for 2023 include new team members and new business initiatives—like the Exteriors Division for our past clients. Our team continues to do an amazing job adapting to the current market environment and always finding ways to improve.
Our team is also working with a national bank exploring financing product development initiatives and helping them develop new renovation financing products for markets across the U.S.
We are working with local industry associations like NARI MN and MN Housing First, and with local chambers and community leaders, ultimately influencing the industry and elevating renovation standards and procedures. We look forward to sharing more about the work we are doing in the Twin Cities in the months to come.
I hope to see you at our upcoming Remodelers Showcase Weekend!
New Spaces is proud to present two entries in the Fall 2022 Remodelers Showcase.
#R32 located at 5416 Shoreview Avenue S. Minneapolis — featuring kitchen, mudroom and primary suite renovations and #R8 at 4850 Four Seasons Court, Eagan — featuring kitchen renovations.
1940’s Cape Cod
KITCHEN | MUDROOM ADDITION | PRIMARY SUITE TRANSFORMATION
Come see what is possible in a 1948 Classic Cape Cod home transformation! Our homeowner wanted to restore her childhood home — the one her father had built. A brilliantly executed compact Kitchen/Mud Room Addition allowed for the critical space plan necessary to help this classic Minneapolis Period home add amenities you won’t generally find in this era home.
An all new kitchen with center-island & mudroom addition featuring a covered deck overlooking a back-yard garden, plus a generous owners’ suite on the 2nd floor with a custom tile walk-in shower and walk-in closet, this charming older home was transformed into a well-functioning "forever home".
You won’t want to miss this beautiful kitchen remodel perched atop a hill on a quiet cul-de-sac in Eagan. This beautiful new space features white upper cabinets with contrasting wood lowers — the sophisticated Cambria countertops and backsplash along with he copper hood are the perfect pairing to complement the existing oak woodwork! If you want to see how to successfully blend
the old with the new this is a great project to tour!

One of the things we are most proud of at New Spaces is our relationship with our clients.
Bryan and Pam Morrison first hired the New Spaces team to completely gut and remodel his-and- hers bathrooms in their 1978-built, traditional two -story home back in 2012. They were so happy with the results that they invited us back in 2014 to do a kitchen and powder room update!
Fast forward to 2022 and we are giving their home an exterior facelift with a fresh new paint job and installing a beautiful double-wide front door. During a recent meeting with Bryan and Pam we asked what they liked most about working with the New Spaces team, their answer — the people and workmanship
