Here's what's been happening at New Spaces.
Founded by Doug and Carol Nelson in 1980, New Spaces is a leading full-service design/build firm serving the metro area. Today, the family tradition continues with the second-generation – President Shawn Nelson. Shawn has served the Twin Cities remodeling and building industry spanning two decades, as the Builders Association of the Twin Cities (BATC) President in 2014, and as a Life Director for The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Shawn currently serves as a city council member for the City of Bloomington and as a board member for the Bloomington Convention and Visitors Bureau. In 2006, New Spaces received the Better Business Bureau Integrity Award and has continued to be honored with industry recognition for design and remodeling projects.
Congratulations to Emma Nelson (and proud parents Shawn Nelson and Ann Nusbaum) on graduating high school. She’ll be studying ecology and renewables at Winona State this fall.
We’d like to welcome Gina Bjorklund to our design team! A talented designer, stager and interior decorator, Gina is already providing her great eye for our photo shoots and Showcase homes.Next up: she’ll be steering our newest client service: interior décor with fabrics, window treatments and furnishings.
Welcome also to Sofia Preciado, a recent graduate from Century College’s Kitchen and Bath program. Sofia stopped by one of our Home Shows this spring and so impressed our team that we wanted to bring her on board. She began interning with us in June.
Big News for New Spaces Lead Carpenter Chad Teigen and his wife Jenny who welcomed their baby boy Harrison Chad Teigen on May 26th. Harrison was welcomed home by his two-year-old big sister Kinsley. Fun fact; Chad’s fatherJoe worked for New Spaces for many years, making Chad a second generation employee. With some luck maybe Kinsley or Harrison will become third generationNew Spaces team members!
All our trade partners are amazing, but we’d like to give a special shout out to Joe Pederson, FCI FloorCoverings International. Joe is one of our client favorites! As our flooring specialist, he provides a wealth of knowledge, precise attention to detail, exceptional customer service and skills that have helped us create national award-winning projects. And of course, all of the products he sells combine durability and beauty at a great price. On top of that, Joe is a dedicated volunteer to serving those in need throughout our community. Thank you Joe for all you do!
At the end of April we were honored to showcase Melanie and T.J’s 1922 bungalow home #9 on the MSP HomeTour. It was a true hit on the tour with over 500 visitors, even when their dog Gordy snuck downstairs to entertain the show-goers. The previous homeowners stopped by and were in awe of the renovations, and we started conversations with 25 homeowners who wanted to see what we can do for their homes.
May 15th marked our annual client flower giveaway this year. Jennifer ensured our Burnsville and Edina locations were stocked with thank-you bouquets of beautiful spring flowers for our clients to pick up.
New Spaces accepted the National ‘Best in Category in the Nation’ award at the NARI monthly meeting in May for our Haugen Project.
Join us in congratulating Marketing Coordinator Jamie Tjornehoj on her college graduation. We appreciate all of her work while she was with us and wish her well in her next phase.
Even though the market is still facing materials and labor shortages, we’re seeing a big uptick in business—in fact, we’ve had as many project inquiries so far this year as we had throughout all of2021.
And, thanks to our great team, we’re fully prepared for that busy future.
I want to mention three of our recent hires: Lead Carpenter David Hagens, Carpenter James McNeal, Lead Designer Ali Boran, and Tate Murchison, Project Controller, who’ve brought their unique talents and great personalities to our team over the last year. And, I’d like to welcome our newest additions, Gina and Sofia (see Staff Updates), I’m looking forward to watching your contributions as we grow.
— New Spaces President Shawn Nelson

How do you update a 1922 Craftsman home to create a modern kitchen? Like this!
First, we needed more space so added 40 square feet via a cantilever addition. Like most old homes, this one needed better connectivity between living spaces and definitely more storage, too. Of course, the original built-in buffet had to stay and we added a feature wall plus a breakfast and coffee bar for convenience, gaining a modern kitchen while staying true to the period and original architectural details.
Our clients love to entertain, but their 2001 walk-out rambler just wasn’t cutting it. The space didn’t flow well with a poorly located central fireplace. With some careful space planning, we were able to relocate the fireplace and add two spacious kitchen islands(plus some amazing cabinetry appliances and finishes). The end result is a main living space that works perfectly, whether for quiet evenings at home, a cocktail party for work friends or having the extended family for a big holiday gathering. As a bonus, the new home office includes two separate work stations.
We were very impressed with the guidance provided to us by the New Space’s team throughout the entire process, from initial consult through design and in the building phase.
Every step was clearly laid out and we always remained confident in the direction of the project.
Communication channels were always open and quickly answered when questions arose. The quality of work was top-notch and we still love the finished product. We are completely satisfied and will definitely come back to New Spaces for any future renovation/remodel projects. — Nils & Natalie, Minneapolis

When Jane Severance asked us to update her childhood home — the one her father had built— it gave us a real challenge. She wanted to restore the 1948 Cape Cod gem to its original glory while adding amenities you won’t generally find in that era home. From our first meeting we knew this was going to be an exceptional project.
With a new mudroom featuring a covered deck overlooking her garden, a new center-island kitchen plus an owners’ suite with a custom tile walk-in shower and walk-in closet, the home is now exactly what she wanted for her forever home. And even better, she’s become like a family member to the New Spaces team. She tells us (and everybody else) how we were committed to her vision to keep the best of her childhood memories intact while gaining a home that has the comforts she’ll want to stay here forever.
