WHO WE ARE

Founded by Doug and Carol Nelson in 1980, New Spaces is a leading full-service design/build firm serving the metro area. Today, the family

tradition continues with the second-generation – President Shawn Nelson. Shawn has served the Twin Cities remodeling and building industry spanning two decades, as the Builders Association of the Twin Cities (BATC) President in 2014, and as a Life Director for The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Shawn currently serves as a city council member for the City of Bloomington and as

a board member for the Bloomington Convention and Visitors Bureau. In 2006, New Spaces received the Better Business Bureau Integrity Award and has continued to be honored with industry recognition for design and remodeling projects.

New Spaces would like to extend gratitude to our Trade Partners whom we honored earlier this month with a special breakfast event. This breakfast is held annually and is a way to say ‘thank you’ and connect with our trusted trade partners on key initiatives and areas where we can grow as a team. Thank you to all our Trade and Industry Partners and a special shout out to our Production Manager Ed and Project Controller Tate for a good meeting and for moving our production and Trade Partner teams forward!

NEW SPACES OUT & ABOUT

MPLS HOME BUILDING & REMODELING SHOW

The Minneapolis Home Building and Remodeling Show took place at the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis in late January. This experience was so fun for our New Spaces team and we are excited to continue the conversations we started with 43 families ready to update their homes.

MPLS HOME & REMODELING SHOW

New Spaces was at the Minneapolis Home + Remodeling Show at U.S. Bank Stadium in February. Bjorn presented “How to Renovate your 1980-2000’s Traditional 2-Story Home”; “Create a Master Plan for your Home” and “How to Renovate a Classic Minneapolis Period Home”. We connected with nearly 50 new faces throughout the weekend.

FIRE & ICE FEST

We were honored to be a sponsor for the 2022 Fire & Ice Fest on Feb. 24th. Thank you to the Edina Chamber of Commerce for having us!

MPLS HOME & GARDEN SHOW

New Spaces attended the Minneapolis Home + Garden Show at the beginning of March. In addition to presenting on the main stage several times throughout the show, the New Spaces team had a blast answering renovation questions from attendees, networking with our Twin Cities community and starting project conversations with 24 families.

MPLS ST PAUL HOME TOUR

Mark your calendar! Come see another amazing New Spaces project on the Minneapolis St. Paul Home Tour — April 30-March 1, 12-5pm. Visit this classic bungalow renovation – #9 - 4638 Garfield Ave., Minneapolis.

PRESIDENT’S REMARKS

We have had some exciting experiences these past few months. Not only have we attended several home shows and expos, we honored our Trade Partners at our annual Trusted Trade Partners Breakfast and our team had a fun evening at the Fire & Ice Fest hosted by the Edina Chamber of Commerce.

I want to take a second to uplift our Trusted Trade Partners who joined us on March 2nd for a morning of reconnecting and encouragement during these tough times in our industry. These folks have shown resilience throughout the pandemic, labor shortages and supply chain issues.

Thank you, Trade Partners, for all that you do.

Looking ahead to the Spring and Summer, here at New Spaces we will be focusing on fostering a sense of togetherness as we find innovating ways to overcome the adverse market circumstances and provide for our clients. Happy Spring!

— New Spaces President Shawn Nelson

#R16 – 4915 Royal Oaks Dr, Minnetonka

The Simmons family collaborated with New Spaces this fall to reconfigure their 1956 mid-century rambler with  a complete main floor transformation. With dreams of having a home suited for family living and entertaining, New Spaces gave the family an open-concept kitchen with front-to-back sight lines; a primary bathroom to create a complete owners’ suite; an added mudroom for functionality; a second bathroom to serve as the kids’/guest bath on the main level — without expanding beyond the existing footprint.

Other features include the replacement of EE windows and adding an exterior patio door for access to the deck area off the main level. Removing a massive masonry fireplace and bearing wall between the kitchen and family room ultimately created a much more functional space plan within the Simmons’ home.

#R11 – 4869 Clearwater Circle, Savage

The Boutelle kitchen has undergone previous updates, but the family needed more space. Removing a wall created an open layout with a gourmet cooking zone featuring new appliances, including a 42" stainless steel range with pull-out spice racks in the vent hood. White cabinets keep the space light and bright and the coffee bar and beverage center were a must for this family. The functional spot is the perfect place for entertaining supplies and snack storage to grab on the way out the door! A prep sink and filtered water dispenser make it convenient to fill the coffee pot and water bottles on the go. A large pantry with sliding barn door and granite countertops give this kitchen everything the family needs.

The master bath was also included in the update. The space was reconfigured and new tile was installed throughout. A large vanity offers ample storage, the luxurious steam shower with vertical tile and shower niches and large free-standing bathtub create a spa-like en suite.

DON’T MISS OUR VIP EVENTS – SAT APRIL 9th

#R11 – 10-11am

From finishes to features, the options are endless! Please join us for a sneak peek of this home and an abbreviated version of our popular Trends and Spends remodeling design and investment seminar!

#R16 – 5-7pm

We will catch up over beverages, Nordic treats and appetizers while getting a behind the scenes tour of the Before & After Transformation of this family’s classic 1950s rambler.

CLIENT SPOTLIGHT

DOWN-SIZED JUST RIGHT

Tom and Denise were down-sizing to a perfectly located 1970’s condo. They wanted to create a space they would love and a place to create memories with their children.

We focused on reconfiguring the kitchen, updating finishes throughout the entire home and transforming both the primary bathroom and hallway bathroom into timeless, functional and beautiful spaces.

See before-and-after images of this condo and learn more about this remodel here.
