Engaging and Eclectic

basement design with industrial, eclectic style in st paul mn

Basement with funky, modern style

After living in their newly-built West St. Paul home for 5 years, Julie and Damon were ready to complete their partially finished lower level. While it already included a finished guest room and a roughed-out family room with a gorgeous fireplace, there was still plenty left to do.

This couple came to the table with many ideas of how to put some creative style into their half-finished basement. Working with New Space’s design professionals, Damon and Julie took their ideas from outline to reality – creating a family room, laundry room, 3/4 bath, flex and storage space for themselves, their friends, creative passions, two dogs, and a parrot.

This basement renovation's unique blend of industrial, modern, and traditional elements is unconventionally engaging. One-of-a-kind design (including mismatched furniture and playful artwork) prioritizes comfort, function, and style.

Playful juxtapositions inspire creativity

Light from the windows reflects off the industrial corrugated tin wall and back into the space. Blonde wooden window frames, doors, and cabinets are a natural modern element. Set into a wall of large format tiles and framed by contrasting mosaic stripes, the ribbon fireplace is the focal point of the family room.

Decor draws inspiration from every theme, period, and style

The design concept of this lower level freely mixes elements across genres. The 3/4 bathroom combines an asymmetrical modern vanity with an ornately framed mirror. A complex crystal chandelier juxtaposes the streamlined look of the fireplace. In the open office space, a guitar hangs on the wall like art, representing Damon as a musician (he plays guitar in a rock band that practices in this basement). Relaxed and not bound to a single design aesthetic, this eclectic lower level inspires creativity and expression.

Gorgeous wood covers the floors in the hallway and laundry room. Even with ample recessed lighting, New Spaces enhanced this landlocked laundry with transoms near the ceiling. This series of cutaways makes space for ambient light to trickle in from the hallway. The wide doorway with a sliding (not swinging) barn door is stylish and functional, adding an industrial edge while conserving space. An accent wall in the hallway builds depth by layering raised panels with silver dome details.
