Obstacles and Opportunities

This Burnsville MN couple is thinking about downsizing in about 5 years. They wanted to make their basement more comfortable and inviting for themselves and future buyers.

Basement updates style, comfort – and resale value.

Greg and Marybeth were ready to give their finished basement an upgrade. Their children are adults and they are considering downsizing – someday. They wanted a space to enjoy, that will be appealing to buyers in the future.

Before: Dimly lit space with an overbuilt fireplace

Without much overhead lighting, the basement was always dark and dim – despite the windows. The white brick fireplace looked dated and overwhelmed space.

After: Light and bright space with simple elegance

We brightened the space by adding overhead lighting, creating negative space around the fireplace, and simplifying the TV wall. In the existing kitchen, new granite countertops give the cabinets a fresh look.

It’s hard to believe, but the cabinets flanking this fireplace were part of the original basement design! The narrow vertical panels have a modern look, which is echoed by the bronze pillars framing the newly-designed fireplace.

New balusters with decorative spirals give this staircase some classic styling that contrasts the fireplace.

Bonus: a secret playroom under the stairs

This cabinet under the stairs is the perfect place for extra storage or playing make believe.
